Lloyd Update: 2018-1-27

Dear partners,
Here is a quick update on the past few weeks.  (Reminder, we are now also communicating the ‘on-the-ground’ aspects of life via a secret Facebook group to allow for more timely prayer and praise requests.  If you did not receive an invite, then please email us and we will add you).

Praises:

  • We cannot overstate how great it was to have the Filceks stay with us for a week and experience our lives.  We are so thankful for your generosity in contributing to the gifts they brought with them.  We also do not take for granted the health and on-time flights coming and going that they experienced as well.
  • We have started new programs this month (Leigh and Zac teaching ESL and Zac playing basketball) at the community center and are praising God for the many new faces that are coming to our classes.

Requests:

  • The local university (we technically live on university property) has not resumed classes yet since Christmas break.  We believe they will return this week or next, and we ask you to pray that God would provide opportunities to interact with these students, most of whom follow the majority religion.
  • Our health continues to be as good if not better than we experienced in America. Please continue to pray for this. But also, we are considering having some orthodontic work done on our 3 oldest children. We could wait until they are adults and staying in the US full time. However, it appears like there is a reputable and sufficiently trained orthodontist in the country that we could use. He is located in the capital city of Jakarta which is a 4.5-hour flight away from our home.  Please pray for us to have wisdom regarding this non-emergency medical need.

(Leigh made this video recently of her weekly shopping trip for the Community Bible Study group in Kalamazoo, you are welcome to watch it as well)

On Mondays and Wednesdays, Zac has been teaching a class of 6-10 Indonesians the fundamentals of basketball, while their parents are in Leigh’s class.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Zac plays 5 on 5 with high schoolers and adults, and it has been great!

Lloyd Update: 2017-12-30

Dear faithful partners,
The Lloyd’s wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Indonesia!  We are doing well, and God is continuing to demonstrate His steadfast love to us in ways difficult to put into an email.

In 2018 we plan to continue these monthly update letters to communicate how we are doing from “1,000 feet-up” perspective.  But we are planning to also begin communicating the ‘on-the-ground’ aspects of life via a secret Facebook group to allow for more timely prayer and praise requests.  Please be on the lookout for an invitation to join this group. (If you do not receive it, then please email us and we will add you).

Praises:

  • We praise God for the many offers to replace our technology that was stolen and the many words of encouragement in reply to last month’s update.
  • We wrapped up our formal ESL teaching obligations early in December and have had a nice restful reprieve that has allowed us to celebrate the birthdays of each of our 3 sons as well as the birth of Jesus recently!
  • Manokwari has also been much more festive and communal this month. This has provided several opportunities to be visited by and visitors to Indonesians in their homes on a more intimate level. We are glad to be progressing along the friendship continuum.
  • We were able to have basketball hoops installed at the community center and are excited to see them be used for God’s glory as we continue to seek avenues to draw people to the community center.

Requests:

  • Please continue to pray for friendships to grow and new ones to form.  We are so thankful for the friendships God has already provided through your prayers, so please keep praying to this end.  It is one of the most encouraging aspects of serving here.
  • In January we will start up our new offerings of ESL to the community.  Please pray for Leigh as she will be teaching her first ESL class to adults while Zac is keeping the kids active on the basketball court.
  • We are SUPER excited to have our Pastor and his wife and daughter come visit us for a week beginning on January 17th.  Please pray for their safety and health in travel.

God has blessed us with generous and kind friends. Here are some of them that visited us on Jayce’s birthday.

Here is one of the newly constructed basketball hoops (lines to be added shortly). It’s been fun to play something that the Indonesians don’t dominate us at (e.g. soccer and badminton)

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-11-25

Dear faithful supporters,
This time of year is a particular reminder of how blessed we are to have been given so many loving friends and family as we really feel your absence.  We miss you and are thankful for all of you.

This update is a departure from our preferred succinct bulleted ‘praise/request’ format as it doesn’t seem to fit our current state of being.

We are very grateful for what God is doing through us.  We have very few skills ‘on paper’ to offer here in Indonesia, yet God continues to draw students to our ESL classes to the extent that the local University will give college credit if they attend our class, and a local nursing school has invited us to provide ESL classes.  We routinely make new acquaintances and people genuinely seem to be happy to see us.

We continue to learn more and more about the culture, but each day we seem to somehow find that we actually know less than we thought we did.   Then when we consider how infrequently we have an opportunity to actually share the Gospel with words, we are discouraged.

You may recall 2 months ago, someone entered our house while we were home and stole our laptop.  This past week, another person entered our daughter’s bedroom, went through her drawers and stole her phone and kindle, when all 6 of us were home.  Our 9-year old Reece finally saw him after it appears he was creeping in and around our house for the better part of an hour (and our house is not THAT big).   Even with GPS and cell signals to pinpoint their location, local authorities were not equipped to recover the devices.  Events like these challenge our desire to love people more than things, to love our enemies, to love like Christ loved us.  We recognize that we are actually far worse sinners than these petty thieves and that God is only asking us to do the same thing He asks all of us to do (simply obey and trust Him -Him being the one that speaks things into existence and moves mountains with His words).  But in spite of these rock-solid promises, this weekend, we feel discouraged and would rather be celebrating Thanksgiving with our doors unlocked on a couch in America with you all.

Please do not take the content of this message to be a red-flag that we are about to buy tickets home or anything. We truly trust God. We just didn’t feel like a bulleted list of praises and requests was an accurate reflection of what’s up with the Lloyd’s.  Thank you for your support and prayers!

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-10-28

Each month we receive a report from TEAM of the financial gifts that have been contributed to our account and, each month we are amazed at God and how He provides so consistently and generously through you.  Thank you!!

Praises:

  • Teaching English to various ages and the free arts and crafts program for children at the community center have been going well and have been a great way to meet needs, meet people, and begin to form relationships.
  • We were invited to start a three-week English club at a local nursing school. The first week of that club is complete. We are glad to be making new relationships and hopefully being a blessing to the community.
  • Our own children are doing well physically and emotionally, and they are making good progress in school (Leigh is their teacher).

Requests:

  • Just a quick reminder of our goal here:  We have been invited to serve at a community center as a platform to form relationships, through which we can share the gospel, and ultimately plant a church from the peoples of the majority religion here in Manokwari.  So, any prayers toward this end are greatly appreciated.
  • For our energy and general zeal in life and ministry.  It seems to occur more frequently here than it did in the US that the day-in-day-out heat and grind of everyday life causes us to collapse into our beds two seconds after the kids are in bed and want to stay there for a week.

Zac has been getting more and more comfortable teaching at the community center, and he is thankful for opportunities that this role has provided.

Through a student in Zac’s English class (who happened to be the head teacher at the local school for nurses), we were both invited to come and teach English at the nursing school twice per week.  We are very grateful to God for this opportunity to interact with 30-40 students each week.

While we frequently hear that very few children are able to or like to read here in Papua, Leigh has found that reading books to children and offering them books to read on their own is in-fact liked by kids regardless of their address.

IMG_20171021_160347
We recently found a soccer club for the boys.  While our boys are relatively way behind in skill level, the locals have been super welcoming and friendly.

IMG-20171023-WA0003
Leigh was blessed recently to have the opportunity to attend a 3-day conference for missionary women about a 1 hr flight away.  God continues to provide for our every need.

We were able to go out for some ‘pizza’ recently and celebrate our 17th year of marriage.  We have our struggles and continue to have to work on our marriage, but it is certainly a gift from God.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-9-30

We are thankful for God’s word which is our only weapon against doubt and unbelief.  His word continues to sustain us through your prayers.

Praises:

  • Leigh and our kids recently enjoyed launching some pilot activities for kids at the community center (e.g. origami, painting, coloring etc…). These activities on a smaller scale were helpful to identify which things would work well and which would not.  This next week they will roll it out to a bigger audience with the hopes to show the love of Christ and develop relationships.
  • We are thankful for our current rhythm of life in this season that allows for regular rest and avoiding getting burned out or short with each other.

Requests:

  • A thief entered our home recently and stole our laptop while Zac and the kids were spending time in a closed off air-conditioned room. This has caused Leigh to feel insecure, and she is having difficulty sleeping well.  Please pray for all of us to not feel anxious about strangers entering our home.
  • We are getting our feet under us at the community center and are brainstorming other ways to reach out to the community.  Please pray for us to have wisdom and boldness in identifying methods that would be most effective.
  • That we would abide in Christ and He would produce fruit through us.  This may sound cliche, but it is an earnest prayer request.

Leigh also had the opportunity to teach Sunday school recently.  Which was good language practice and deepened her compassion for the children here.

Zac is thankful for the small steps he continues to take in making Indonesian friends and developing deeper relationships with locals.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-9-2

Dear faithful supporters,
As we observe that it is now September and recognize the holiday weekend occurring in the US, we are struck by how quickly times go by and how little time we really have.  We left the US about 16 months ago and it seems like we are only just getting our feet wet.  Your faithful support and partnership causes us to not grow weary as we try to redeem the time for His glory.

Praises:

  • Zac was encouraged to have a couple real gospel conversations with locals recently.  He is both encouraged that they occurred and that language seemed to be less of a barrier.
  • Zac began teaching a new round of English courses this past week. We are encouraged to see new people signing up and a good mix of religions represented.
  • God continues to care for each of us. Grace is enjoying continuing to participate in and enjoy youth group. The boys are getting more excited about church each week (which is a praise because listening in another language for two hours can be exhausting).

Requests:

  • Following the praise about Zac’s gospel conversations above, please pray that God would continue to provide these opportunities. Both of the conversations occurred without any arrangement on Zac’s part, so please pray to the “Arranger”.
  • Leigh is going to start some small children’s activities at the community center this week with our leader Diane.  Pray for these to be energizing, encouraging for her and the children, and effective.

In one of many of our continuous cultural experiences, Leigh attended a birthday party recently where the birthday ‘girl’ feeds the first piece of cake to her dearest friend.
IMG_20170824_111912
Zac had the opportunity to travel 3 hours into the interior with Walter and Ryan Kennedy (teammates) to see what God has done. This is a photo of the students at the bible school greeting Walter as he arrives. Zac described it as akin to arriving in the Shire with Gandolf. God has really blessed the people of Minyambau.

The boys have really been enjoying church lately, which is a complete turnaround since we arrived. Going to church with kids can be hard sometimes, so we acknowledge their heart change as a true gift from God.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-8-5

Dear faithful supporters,
Thank you for supporting us and reading our updates!  Your feedback is always encouraging 🙂

Praises:

  • We continue to meet Indonesians and are increasingly able to interact with them.  We are regularly attending an Indonesian church of about 20-30 adults that has been a good conduit to finding our place in this culture, and we praise God for this.
  • Zac’s teaching of English as a Second Language has been going well and has been a good way to meet and interact with individuals from the majority religion.

Requests:

  • We are getting over our ‘honey-moon’ period here in Manokwari and the little day-to-day stressors (power outages, lack of water, shopping at the open market) are losing their novelty and becoming more annoying.  Please pray that we would find our refuge only in God.
  • For existing relationships to grow and for new ones to form.

Our ‘Ninja Warrior’ course in our ‘garage’ attracted the local kids, which Reece was happy about.

The boys ‘sunday school’ class has been good for their language practice.
