Lloyd Update: 2018-5-5

Dear partners,
We count it a privilege to be sent by servants like you that freely sacrifice for the praise of His name.  Much of these updates have been shared on our private Facebook page.  If you are not following us there and would like more frequent updates, please follow us there.

Praises:

  • We were able to renew our permission to stay in the country for another year (we renew annually) with 3 days to spare before we would be forced to leave the country.  God’s perfect timing 🙂
  • Zac’s 3-on-3 tournament was very well attended and has brought many new people to the community center for Zac to interact with during the week.
  • The open house at the community center was well attended and provided good opportunities to interact with our community in a more relaxed and festive setting.
  • Our trip to Jakarta for the kids’ orthodontist visit went well.  The middle two boys now have retainer type devices that we adjust weekly and our daughter Grace must wait until a couple more adult teeth come in before getting braces.
  • We’ve spent a few days this week without internet (city-wide blackout) and are praising God for his provision to interact with family and friends a world away via technology.

Requests:

  • In addition to her twice-weekly ESL class at the community center, Leigh is also teaching ESL twice weekly to the nursing instructors at the nursing school.  (She homeschools 4 children also 🙂 ).  Please pray for her to prioritize appropriately and serve well.
  • Zac has been invited to come to the university and teach English to 12 professors there.  He also may have an opportunity to give a talk on toxicology (his background) at the university.  Please pray for these opportunities to develop as God desires and that Zac would walk in obedience.
  • This past month Leigh has had some weird rashes that come on quickly and spread across her entire body.  She can get a bit panicky in these situations and does not count them among her favorite things in Indonesia.  Please pray for her health and these weird sicknesses to not last long or be too serious.

We were able to host a ‘family worship’ service with our church in our home this past month.

And we finished the family worship night as you would expect… playing on the American Ninja Warrior ropes course in front of our house 🙂

Here are the winning and runner-up team at the 3-on-3 tournament.  We were so thankful for their great sportsmanship.  It was a joy to see them play and have fun.

Lloyd Update 2018-3-31

Dear partners,
Praising God with you, our partners, for His provision for us and freedom from bondage to sin.

Praises:

  • Thank you for praying for our classes, they have been really well attended recently.  Please pray for God to open up doors in the lives of those that we are interacting with.
  • Despite so many of our local friends becoming sick with Malaria, God continues to protect our health, and we attribute that to prayer.

Requests:

  • On April 15th, we will be having an open-house at the community center to celebrate those students that have completed the 3 month ESL course.  The board has also decided to invite more people from the community up for a time of food and interaction.  Please pray that this will go well and be effective.
  • Zac is planning a 3-on-3 tournament on April 21st.  Please pray that this is well-attended and a fun activity for the locals.
  • We will be traveling to Jakarta on April 16th to have our 3 oldest start orthodontal treatments.  Please pray that this trip goes uneventfully.
IMG-20180322-WA0000
Leigh and Grace have a very large ESL class (27+) and our TEAMmate (Diane Kennedy) also has a large ESL class this month.  We are excited to see so many people at the community center.
IMG_20180319_160612
Zac continues to spend several days each week at the community center teaching basketball to boys (ages 7-14, usually).  There have been 20 or more kids showing up recently.  This provides a natural context to share stories and teach truth.
IMG_20180327_095936
The basketball rims are breaking regularly (about once every 2 weeks).  And no, it’s not because Zac is dunking too often, as I know many of you were thinking.  This is just an example of the many ‘little’ things that seem to occur routinely that cause us to not trust in ourselves or things in this world.
IMG_20180315_204603949
We continue to deepen friendships and relationships with locals.  Leigh and Grace attended a birthday party recently.
IMG_20180316_092508
Under the ‘what we do for entertainment’ banner, Zac and the boys have been able to enjoy March Madness this year 🙂

Lloyd Update 2018-3-10

Dear partners,
Thank you for your prayer and support.  We continually give thanks and praises to God for you.

Praises:

  • We had an encouraging meeting with fellow TEAMmates here in Indonesia in February.  It was very helpful to hear about what others are doing and how to pray for them.
  • Things are going well at the Community Center as we continue to expand our activities and ‘footprint’ in the community and have a new zeal and energy for service.

Requests:

  • Zac has been able to connect with some like-minded nationals recently.  Please pray for these relationships to deepen and that they would spur one another on.
  • Please pray that God would bring the people he wants us to interact with to our various classes and activities at the community center and that we would be open and yielded to the Spirit’s leading.

IMG_20180308_173645
The netting around the basketball court is complete and creates a much safer place to play basketball.  This has been a great platform for Zac to interact with cousins in our community.

IMG_20180307_170834 (1)
More and more kids are coming to Zac’s basketball ‘clinic’ at the community center.  This has been fun for Zac and well-received by the community.

IMG-20180223-WA0000
Our organization recently held an annual conference for all of its missionaries in this part of the world at a nearby city (about an hour flight).  This was a very encouraging time for our family.

IMG_20180310_083627
While away at the annual conference, the owners of our home increased the height of the barbed-wire that surrounds the home that we stay in.  This provides another level of security to help ease some of Leigh’s anxieties of intruders.

Lloyd Update: 2018-1-27

Dear partners,
Here is a quick update on the past few weeks.  (Reminder, we are now also communicating the ‘on-the-ground’ aspects of life via a secret Facebook group to allow for more timely prayer and praise requests.  If you did not receive an invite, then please email us and we will add you).

Praises:

  • We cannot overstate how great it was to have the Filceks stay with us for a week and experience our lives.  We are so thankful for your generosity in contributing to the gifts they brought with them.  We also do not take for granted the health and on-time flights coming and going that they experienced as well.
  • We have started new programs this month (Leigh and Zac teaching ESL and Zac playing basketball) at the community center and are praising God for the many new faces that are coming to our classes.

Requests:

  • The local university (we technically live on university property) has not resumed classes yet since Christmas break.  We believe they will return this week or next, and we ask you to pray that God would provide opportunities to interact with these students, most of whom follow the majority religion.
  • Our health continues to be as good if not better than we experienced in America. Please continue to pray for this. But also, we are considering having some orthodontic work done on our 3 oldest children. We could wait until they are adults and staying in the US full time. However, it appears like there is a reputable and sufficiently trained orthodontist in the country that we could use. He is located in the capital city of Jakarta which is a 4.5-hour flight away from our home.  Please pray for us to have wisdom regarding this non-emergency medical need.

(Leigh made this video recently of her weekly shopping trip for the Community Bible Study group in Kalamazoo, you are welcome to watch it as well)

On Mondays and Wednesdays, Zac has been teaching a class of 6-10 Indonesians the fundamentals of basketball, while their parents are in Leigh’s class.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Zac plays 5 on 5 with high schoolers and adults, and it has been great!

Lloyd Update: 2017-12-30

Dear faithful partners,
The Lloyd’s wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Indonesia!  We are doing well, and God is continuing to demonstrate His steadfast love to us in ways difficult to put into an email.

In 2018 we plan to continue these monthly update letters to communicate how we are doing from “1,000 feet-up” perspective.  But we are planning to also begin communicating the ‘on-the-ground’ aspects of life via a secret Facebook group to allow for more timely prayer and praise requests.  Please be on the lookout for an invitation to join this group. (If you do not receive it, then please email us and we will add you).

Praises:

  • We praise God for the many offers to replace our technology that was stolen and the many words of encouragement in reply to last month’s update.
  • We wrapped up our formal ESL teaching obligations early in December and have had a nice restful reprieve that has allowed us to celebrate the birthdays of each of our 3 sons as well as the birth of Jesus recently!
  • Manokwari has also been much more festive and communal this month. This has provided several opportunities to be visited by and visitors to Indonesians in their homes on a more intimate level. We are glad to be progressing along the friendship continuum.
  • We were able to have basketball hoops installed at the community center and are excited to see them be used for God’s glory as we continue to seek avenues to draw people to the community center.

Requests:

  • Please continue to pray for friendships to grow and new ones to form.  We are so thankful for the friendships God has already provided through your prayers, so please keep praying to this end.  It is one of the most encouraging aspects of serving here.
  • In January we will start up our new offerings of ESL to the community.  Please pray for Leigh as she will be teaching her first ESL class to adults while Zac is keeping the kids active on the basketball court.
  • We are SUPER excited to have our Pastor and his wife and daughter come visit us for a week beginning on January 17th.  Please pray for their safety and health in travel.

God has blessed us with generous and kind friends. Here are some of them that visited us on Jayce’s birthday.

Here is one of the newly constructed basketball hoops (lines to be added shortly). It’s been fun to play something that the Indonesians don’t dominate us at (e.g. soccer and badminton)

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-11-25

Dear faithful supporters,
This time of year is a particular reminder of how blessed we are to have been given so many loving friends and family as we really feel your absence.  We miss you and are thankful for all of you.

This update is a departure from our preferred succinct bulleted ‘praise/request’ format as it doesn’t seem to fit our current state of being.

We are very grateful for what God is doing through us.  We have very few skills ‘on paper’ to offer here in Indonesia, yet God continues to draw students to our ESL classes to the extent that the local University will give college credit if they attend our class, and a local nursing school has invited us to provide ESL classes.  We routinely make new acquaintances and people genuinely seem to be happy to see us.

We continue to learn more and more about the culture, but each day we seem to somehow find that we actually know less than we thought we did.   Then when we consider how infrequently we have an opportunity to actually share the Gospel with words, we are discouraged.

You may recall 2 months ago, someone entered our house while we were home and stole our laptop.  This past week, another person entered our daughter’s bedroom, went through her drawers and stole her phone and kindle, when all 6 of us were home.  Our 9-year old Reece finally saw him after it appears he was creeping in and around our house for the better part of an hour (and our house is not THAT big).   Even with GPS and cell signals to pinpoint their location, local authorities were not equipped to recover the devices.  Events like these challenge our desire to love people more than things, to love our enemies, to love like Christ loved us.  We recognize that we are actually far worse sinners than these petty thieves and that God is only asking us to do the same thing He asks all of us to do (simply obey and trust Him -Him being the one that speaks things into existence and moves mountains with His words).  But in spite of these rock-solid promises, this weekend, we feel discouraged and would rather be celebrating Thanksgiving with our doors unlocked on a couch in America with you all.

Please do not take the content of this message to be a red-flag that we are about to buy tickets home or anything. We truly trust God. We just didn’t feel like a bulleted list of praises and requests was an accurate reflection of what’s up with the Lloyd’s.  Thank you for your support and prayers!

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-10-28

Each month we receive a report from TEAM of the financial gifts that have been contributed to our account and, each month we are amazed at God and how He provides so consistently and generously through you.  Thank you!!

Praises:

  • Teaching English to various ages and the free arts and crafts program for children at the community center have been going well and have been a great way to meet needs, meet people, and begin to form relationships.
  • We were invited to start a three-week English club at a local nursing school. The first week of that club is complete. We are glad to be making new relationships and hopefully being a blessing to the community.
  • Our own children are doing well physically and emotionally, and they are making good progress in school (Leigh is their teacher).

Requests:

  • Just a quick reminder of our goal here:  We have been invited to serve at a community center as a platform to form relationships, through which we can share the gospel, and ultimately plant a church from the peoples of the majority religion here in Manokwari.  So, any prayers toward this end are greatly appreciated.
  • For our energy and general zeal in life and ministry.  It seems to occur more frequently here than it did in the US that the day-in-day-out heat and grind of everyday life causes us to collapse into our beds two seconds after the kids are in bed and want to stay there for a week.
IMG-20171021-WA0010
Zac has been getting more and more comfortable teaching at the community center, and he is thankful for opportunities that this role has provided.

IMG_20171024_145426624_HDR
Through a student in Zac’s English class (who happened to be the head teacher at the local school for nurses), we were both invited to come and teach English at the nursing school twice per week.  We are very grateful to God for this opportunity to interact with 30-40 students each week.

IMG_20171018_163933510
While we frequently hear that very few children are able to or like to read here in Papua, Leigh has found that reading books to children and offering them books to read on their own is in-fact liked by kids regardless of their address.

IMG_20171021_160347
We recently found a soccer club for the boys.  While our boys are relatively way behind in skill level, the locals have been super welcoming and friendly.

IMG-20171023-WA0003
Leigh was blessed recently to have the opportunity to attend a 3-day conference for missionary women about a 1 hr flight away.  God continues to provide for our every need.

IMG_20171007_181356
We were able to go out for some ‘pizza’ recently and celebrate our 17th year of marriage.  We have our struggles and continue to have to work on our marriage, but it is certainly a gift from God.
