Lloyd Family Update – 2017-10-28

Each month we receive a report from TEAM of the financial gifts that have been contributed to our account and, each month we are amazed at God and how He provides so consistently and generously through you.  Thank you!!

Praises:

  • Teaching English to various ages and the free arts and crafts program for children at the community center have been going well and have been a great way to meet needs, meet people, and begin to form relationships.
  • We were invited to start a three-week English club at a local nursing school. The first week of that club is complete. We are glad to be making new relationships and hopefully being a blessing to the community.
  • Our own children are doing well physically and emotionally, and they are making good progress in school (Leigh is their teacher).

Requests:

  • Just a quick reminder of our goal here:  We have been invited to serve at a community center as a platform to form relationships, through which we can share the gospel, and ultimately plant a church from the peoples of the majority religion here in Manokwari.  So, any prayers toward this end are greatly appreciated.
  • For our energy and general zeal in life and ministry.  It seems to occur more frequently here than it did in the US that the day-in-day-out heat and grind of everyday life causes us to collapse into our beds two seconds after the kids are in bed and want to stay there for a week.

Zac has been getting more and more comfortable teaching at the community center, and he is thankful for opportunities that this role has provided.

Through a student in Zac’s English class (who happened to be the head teacher at the local school for nurses), we were both invited to come and teach English at the nursing school twice per week.  We are very grateful to God for this opportunity to interact with 30-40 students each week.

While we frequently hear that very few children are able to or like to read here in Papua, Leigh has found that reading books to children and offering them books to read on their own is in-fact liked by kids regardless of their address.

IMG_20171021_160347
We recently found a soccer club for the boys.  While our boys are relatively way behind in skill level, the locals have been super welcoming and friendly.

IMG-20171023-WA0003
Leigh was blessed recently to have the opportunity to attend a 3-day conference for missionary women about a 1 hr flight away.  God continues to provide for our every need.

IMG_20171007_181356
We were able to go out for some ‘pizza’ recently and celebrate our 17th year of marriage.  We have our struggles and continue to have to work on our marriage, but it is certainly a gift from God.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-9-30

We are thankful for God’s word which is our only weapon against doubt and unbelief.  His word continues to sustain us through your prayers.

Praises:

  • Leigh and our kids recently enjoyed launching some pilot activities for kids at the community center (e.g. origami, painting, coloring etc…). These activities on a smaller scale were helpful to identify which things would work well and which would not.  This next week they will roll it out to a bigger audience with the hopes to show the love of Christ and develop relationships.
  • We are thankful for our current rhythm of life in this season that allows for regular rest and avoiding getting burned out or short with each other.

Requests:

  • A thief entered our home recently and stole our laptop while Zac and the kids were spending time in a closed off air-conditioned room. This has caused Leigh to feel insecure, and she is having difficulty sleeping well.  Please pray for all of us to not feel anxious about strangers entering our home.
  • We are getting our feet under us at the community center and are brainstorming other ways to reach out to the community.  Please pray for us to have wisdom and boldness in identifying methods that would be most effective.
  • That we would abide in Christ and He would produce fruit through us.  This may sound cliche, but it is an earnest prayer request.

Leigh had the opportunity to host a women’s worship service recently.
IMG_20170910_101544
Leigh also had the opportunity to teach Sunday school recently.  Which was good language practice and deepened her compassion for the children here.

Zac is thankful for the small steps he continues to take in making Indonesian friends and developing deeper relationships with locals.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-9-2

Dear faithful supporters,
As we observe that it is now September and recognize the holiday weekend occurring in the US, we are struck by how quickly times go by and how little time we really have.  We left the US about 16 months ago and it seems like we are only just getting our feet wet.  Your faithful support and partnership causes us to not grow weary as we try to redeem the time for His glory.

Praises:

  • Zac was encouraged to have a couple real gospel conversations with locals recently.  He is both encouraged that they occurred and that language seemed to be less of a barrier.
  • Zac began teaching a new round of English courses this past week. We are encouraged to see new people signing up and a good mix of religions represented.
  • God continues to care for each of us. Grace is enjoying continuing to participate in and enjoy youth group. The boys are getting more excited about church each week (which is a praise because listening in another language for two hours can be exhausting).

Requests:

  • Following the praise about Zac’s gospel conversations above, please pray that God would continue to provide these opportunities. Both of the conversations occurred without any arrangement on Zac’s part, so please pray to the “Arranger”.
  • Leigh is going to start some small children’s activities at the community center this week with our leader Diane.  Pray for these to be energizing, encouraging for her and the children, and effective.
IMG_20170817_184902200
In one of many of our continuous cultural experiences, Leigh attended a birthday party recently where the birthday ‘girl’ feeds the first piece of cake to her dearest friend.
IMG_20170824_111912
Zac had the opportunity to travel 3 hours into the interior with Walter and Ryan Kennedy (teammates) to see what God has done. This is a photo of the students at the bible school greeting Walter as he arrives. Zac described it as akin to arriving in the Shire with Gandolf. God has really blessed the people of Minyambau.
IMG_20170827_095552619
The boys have really been enjoying church lately, which is a complete turnaround since we arrived. Going to church with kids can be hard sometimes, so we acknowledge their heart change as a true gift from God.

Lloyd Family Update – 2017-8-5

Dear faithful supporters,
Thank you for supporting us and reading our updates!  Your feedback is always encouraging 🙂

Praises:

  • We continue to meet Indonesians and are increasingly able to interact with them.  We are regularly attending an Indonesian church of about 20-30 adults that has been a good conduit to finding our place in this culture, and we praise God for this.
  • Zac’s teaching of English as a Second Language has been going well and has been a good way to meet and interact with individuals from the majority religion.

Requests:

  • We are getting over our ‘honey-moon’ period here in Manokwari and the little day-to-day stressors (power outages, lack of water, shopping at the open market) are losing their novelty and becoming more annoying.  Please pray that we would find our refuge only in God.
  • For existing relationships to grow and for new ones to form.

    IMG_20170802_132544
Our ‘Ninja Warrior’ course in our ‘garage’ attracted the local kids, which Reece was happy about.
    IMG_20170715_154405845
The boys ‘sunday school’ class has been good for their language practice.

Lloyd Family Update – (2017-7-1)

Dear faithful supporters,
Thank you for your prayers and support. God continues to give us good gifts beyond what we deserve because of your prayers.  “So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”  Mt 7:11

We love hearing from you and praying for you as well.  If you have any prayer requests, please send them our way as we would love to join in lifting them up to God.

Praises:

  • Leigh arrived safely back in Manokwari last Friday from her trip to the US.  We have been enjoying getting back to  ‘normal’ life since her return.
  • About 12 days ago, Bryce fell and cut his knee on some glass requiring 13 stitches.  We’re always a little leery of medical treatments here in Manokwari, but we praise God that he has avoided infection and it appears to be healing well.  (In fact, the entire visit to the ‘ER’ took less than hour, which included administration and a visit to the pharmacy)

Requests:

  • Our on-going request is for God to continue to open doors for us to naturally form relationships in our community and through the Community Center.  There has already been interest from some to meet one-on-one.
  • Please also continue to pray for our diligence in continuing to put in the effort to progress in language studies and not settle for ‘functional’ language ability.

We were all SUPER excited to see Leigh return to Manokwari.  It was a great day!

Here is a picture of our kids and their current ages for your reference.  The photo includes the bags of millipedes they caught.  I think the final count was around 270.  Don’t worry, we didn’t eat them or anything 🙂

It’s been a while since you have seen and heard all of us, so we thought we would add a video of us as well for those that are interested.

Update (2017-4-1)

Thank you for praying for us.  God has blessed us greatly through your prayers and support.

Praises

  • Our TEAM-mates in Manokwari were able to negotiate and sign a contract for a house for us!  We are very excited to have a house that we can move to directly. We are thankful to know we do not have to search for or live in temporary housing in Manokwari while we searching for a house.
  • We received a ton of help from friends with loading up our stuff and shipping it to Manokwari this past weekend! The container has been sent by boat and should arrive in the next 3-4 weeks. We are extremely grateful for the help and to have that aspect of our move behind us.
  • We are entering our final week of language school! Praise God for His faithfulness. We still have a long way to go to communicate like a native speaker, but little-by-little we see progress.

Requests:

  • Please continue to pray for our Work visas to be issued.  We have had some interaction regarding them recently and are optimistic that they will be issued soon.  We have now moved out of our house and are staying at a dormitory-style apartment. We are living out of suitcases until we receive word that they have been issued.
  • Our current plan remains the same (but we will let the Lord establish our steps)
    • Ship our furniture and most of our belongings to Papua- 3/25 – DONE
    • Finish language school, including writing a 10 page paper – 4/7
    • Fly to Singapore to pick up our work visa and visit doctors and dentists.- 4/12
    • Fly to Manokwari to serve in the Community Center – around 4/18
  • Zac is participating in a workshop/training this weekend on sharing his faith in our current context (Any-3). This training includes practical application in which the gospel will be shared. Please pray for God’s spirit to work in the hearts of the lost even through these training exercises.
  • Please continue to pray for our family through this season of transition. We are all experiencing moments of sadness, excitement, and sometimes frustration. Stress levels are naturally up, but God continues to reveal Himself to us in new ways through each season. So please pray that we would continue to abide in Him regardless of our circumstances.

We are in the process of saying goodbye to friends that we have made in the 11 months we have been living here. Here is a photo of us and a family that we met at language school. This family has been a great encouragement to us. Our early days involved communication through broken Indonesian as we do not speak Korean and they do not speak very much English. We have realized that we don’t like saying goodbyes all that much.

Update (2017-3-11)

Thank you for your prayers and support!
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: Because we are moving soon, please do NOT send any more packages or letters to our address in Salatiga!! We will hopefully have a new address SOON so we can continue to be so blessed and encouraged by packages and letters in the future. Every time we receive mail from America it is such a wonderful GIFT to our whole family.

Praises:

  • Zac, Leigh, and Grace each completed another level of language.  Zac and Leigh have one more 4-week unit to complete.  We all decided Grace is at a good stopping point now, so she is not quite so busy up until the day we move.
  • Good progress has been made on finding a home for us in Manokwari.  A few steps to go, but we are encouraged by God’s provision.
  • We have endured some significant respiratory illnesses these past 2+weeks, but seem to finally be coming out of it, and have a renewed gratitude for health 🙂
Requests:
  • Please pray for final negotiations that are occurring soon on a house that our family may live in Manokwari. Our TEAMmates already living in Manokwari have searched and are working on our behalf.
  • Please pray for our Work Visas to be issued according to God’s timing.  We currently plan to:
    • Ship our furniture and most of our belongings to Papua- 3/25
    • Finish language school, including writing a 10 page paper – 4/10
    • Fly to Singapore to pick up our work visa and visit doctors and dentists.- 4/12
    • Then fly to Manokwari to serve in the Community Center – around 4/18
  • For all of the logistics that go along with packing a container full of our stuff to ship to Manokwari.
  • The hearts of our kids as we transition to another new home.  They are doing well, but we know that is only because of prayer.  So please pray for them and us as parents as we take this next step.

Somehow it just seems easier to include photos of our kids :).  This is our 13-year old daughter getting ready to ride to her first babysitting job.  She is babysitting the ~1 year old son of a friend of ours for about 2.5 hours 3x/week (they grow up too fast)
