Update (2016-10-29)

Praising God for His faithfulness in providing you as our support team.

Praises:

  • Just to sing God’s praises.  Last time we mentioned rainy season and requested prayer for patience with stir-crazy kids.  Many days these past two weeks have been remarkably rain free.  Even though we didn’t specifically request that God would take away the rain, He still provided generously.
  • We have finished with exactly HALF of our language school program! (There are nine units…and we are half way through the 5th unit) We are so grateful that God has provided a wonderful language school with encouraging, helpful coaches.

Requests:

  • Probably our biggest struggle remains the sin nature that remains in each member of our family (we did not manage to leave that behind).  Please continue to pray for the relationships within our family.
  • Please keep up the diligent prayer for our language studies. We must frequently ‘interview” our Indonesian friends, acquaintances, and neighbors. Sometimes this is a daunting task. Please pray for our continued diligence in understanding the language and culture.

Zac and Grace took a week night recently to go on a “date night” that had only one rule; at every intersection they had to take the road that had the greater incline.  Here is a selfie they took when they could go no higher (Salatiga is the behind and below)

We intend for this communication to be a quick snapshot of life in Indonesia so that you can be in prayer and we can stay connected with the body of Christ that is sending us.

Update (2016-10-15)

Dear Support Team,

We thank God for your prayers, emails, provisions, and encouragement to us.  You are a precious gift.

Praises:

  • We successfully completed our 4th of nine units of language school and have had the past 3 days off to rest recover.  The next unit starts on Monday :).
  • We continue to remain healthy. The kids seem to be developing some allergies and we have occasional bathroom issues, but overall, remarkably healthy.
  • We had the opportunity this past Sunday to visit a church about 2 hours away that our Organization (TEAM) helped start 20+ years ago.  It was a blessing to see God’s work.
Requests:
  • Rainy season has started here, which so far means much more time indoors.  Please pray for our family to enjoy each season that God creates and endure with grace the “I’m bored” cries that we often hear from our boys.
  • Please pray for us to have continued diligence and energy to learn the language and to daily rest in the source of our joy and contentment.

It’s been fun to watch our kids warm up to the neighborhood kids that want to come and play after school.  We pray that this continues when we move to Manokwari.

Update (2016-10-1)

Dear Support Team,

We thought we would also give our update via video as well this week (click this link if you would like to see a video of the same information listed below)

Thank you for your packages, prayers, emails, and all the ways you show us that you are still thinking of us!  We are blessed by God! Our financial needs continue to be met as well. Thank you for partnering with us.

Praises:

  • Our TEAMmate’s (Jake) back is slowly feeling better each day, and he has been able to continue in language school.
  • We are developing closer relationships with some neighbors and local business owners. Frequently we must ‘interview’ nationals for homework assignments. These relationships are becoming more authentic as we now frequently stop to have brief conversations throughout our week that have nothing to do with our homework assignments.
  • We continue to acclimate to this new culture, language, and environment.  It is not easy, but we praise God for bringing us this far.
Requests:
  • We are in a waiting mode for a new vehicle.  We are in no hurry, and it seems wise to wait.  Please pray that God would bring us the vehicle that is best for us in His timing.
  • Please pray for safety as we travel each day. Motorcycle accidents are a very common occurrence here. We appreciate prayer for God’s protection over our family as we travel in a place where their seem to be no traffic laws. Our Western way of understanding has prevented us from acclimating completely to the Indonesia method of navigation traffic!

Several members of our family have been encouraged by (and memorized) I Thessalonians 2:8: “So being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you no only the gospel of God but also our very own selves, because you have become very dear to us.”

  • In light of that verse, please pray for diligence in studying and practicing the language each day. It is hard to share our very own selves if we can not communicate well.
  • Also in light of that verse, please continue to pray for relationships to develop here. We desire God to make the people here “very dear to us” that are already very dear to Him. Understanding culture and acclimating well is a big part of that process.

Our kids continue to be a blessing.  While parenting remains hard, we are encouraged by their initiative to walk up to street vendors and order and buy weird/different foods on their own.  Also, we are encouraged when they ask if they can make the cookies from a recipe they read in a book.  (In contrast to what seems like just last week when we were changing their diapers)
